BLOOD taken from Princess Diana at the time of her death is to be tested to see if she was pregnant, the Sunday Express can reveal.
Sir John Stevens, the former police chief investigating the tragedy, said contrary to earlier reports, samples of it were “still in existence”.
And the blood – stored under special conditions in a French laboratory for nearly nine years – could determine conclusively whether she was carrying a child when she died.
VITAL TESTS: Samples of Diana’s blood have been kept for nearly nine years
New forensic techniques will be used to detect minute traces of the hormone HCG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin – that appear in the first weeks of pregnancy.
A positive result would mean she was pregnant, bearing out the theory she was carrying the child of Dodi Fayed, who died with her in the Paris crash along with driver Henri Paul. Sir John told the Sunday Express: “This is leading edge technology. We’re using the best people in the world and have exhibits of blood which have been kept in a lab in France.”
Specialist forensic expert Dr Graham Beastall, president of the Association for Clinical Biochemistry, said the blood samples would be good quality because they had been stored under lab conditions. He added the new tests were “definitive”, saying: “In a non-pregnant person the hormone is not there at all.”
Sir John was appointed by Royal Coroner Michael Burgess to investigate Diana’s death. The inquest opens later this year or early 2007
